Republicans will lack Pa. speaker in prime time

U.S. Senator Bob Casey was able to address the nation in prime-time last night and looking ahead to the Republican National Convention Casey will be the only Pennsylvanian to do so.  The Republican list does include former Governor Tom Ridge on Tuesday night, but Ridge’s appearance will be much like Ed Rendell’s was and will be delivered before prime time.

Casey will have a chance to do tonight what his father was denied of in 1992

In 1992 when Bill Clinton was about to become the official nominee for the Democratic Party, two-term Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey was denied a chance to speak at the Democratic National Convention.  16 years later when Bill’s wife Hillary Clinton came looking for support in Pa., Robert Casey’s son Bob Casey decided to join on with Barack Obama.

The elder Casey was denied a chance to speak at the convention because he was a pro-life Democrat and wanted to address the issue to the convention.  Tonight the junior senator will have a chance to address the nation in prime-time and will focus on the economy. It is unlikely Bob Casey will bring up the life issue as his father wanted to do 16 years ago.

CNN has put together a slide show of 19 “key players” to watch at the Democratic National Convention.  You would expect among those to be Sen. Bob Casey who was a key and early supporter of Obama in Pennsylvania.  Casey did not make the list, neither did Governor Ed Rendell.  The only member of the Pa. delegation to make the list is Congressman Pat Murphy.
