DENVER--In 18 years representing Philadelphia, U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah has never been seriously challenged in his overwhelmingly Democratic 2nd Congressional District.
This year, with a young political activist who only recently entered the race opposing him, he sees no reason why things should be any different.
"I'm going to be spending every day campaigning for Barack Obama and Joe Biden," Fattah told PolitickerPa.com this morning after the state delegation breakfast. "I'm not going to be spending any time worrying about my own election," he added.
Fattah said he had "mixed feelings" about his opponent, Republican Adam Lang.
"I'm very impressed with what he's done at the community level, and it's always great to see young people involved in politics," Fattah said. "I think it's unfortunate his first contest is one where he won't come out on top."

I think the arrogance in a statement that an incumbent congressman will not even bother to campaign suggests in a microcosm everything that is wrong with our political system. I don't know whether to blame Fattah, who I think is universally and justifiably regarded as a lightweight, or a Republican Party which effectively cooperates in this charade by refusing to provide serious support for candidates in this district. I can say that Adam Lang is a very capable candidate, and I think that he may surprise people who want to have an election and not a coronation.
