Strong quarter from Hart overshadowed by Altmire's continued success

U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire: Campaign photoU.S. Rep. Jason Altmire: Campaign photoU.S. Rep. Jason Altmire (D-McCandless) continues to maintain a cash advantage over challenger Melissa Hart in a matchup of two of the state's fundraising heavyweights.

Altmire raised about $456,000 in the second quarter, bringing his total fundraising take to $1.57 million.

His totals overshadow a strong quarter from Hart, who raised almost $300,000 in the second quarter. She now has roughly $624,000 in cash on hand.

Hart's campaign acknowledged the disparity but said it isn't a huge hindrance.

"We're at where we need to be," Alicia Collins, Hart campaign manager said Tuesday. "We have the money we need to win the seat back."

Hart is different than most challengers because her years as a congresswoman and state senator already give her great name recognition in the area, Collins said.

"We just have to get our message out," she said.

Mike Mikus, Altmire's campaign manager, said his candidate has done well raising money because he's a moderate. Donors who have never contributed to a Democratic candidate before are open to supporting him.
