Attorney General Tom Corbett has interviewed more than 20 House Republicans the past few weeks as part of his ongoing "Bonusgate" investigation, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
"It hasn't hit 30 yet," House Republican spokesman Stephen Miskin told the paper. "We are fully cooperating with the attorney general's investigation. We are not throwing up any roadblocks."
The Tribune-Review reports the attorney general's investigation into the HRC has stepped up since it indicted 12 current and former members of the Houses Democratic Caucus in July.
It also supports the Republican Corbett's long-stated claim that he will investigate all four caucuses, Republicans and Democrats alike. The attorney general has walked a political tightrope during "Bonusgate" as he tries to fend off charges from Democrats that the investigation is purely political in nature.
Corbett faces Democrat John Morganelli this fall as he seeks re-election, and he is rumored to be a GOP gubernatorial candidate in 2010.
Corbett has a long way to go
There is a big difference between a friendly prosecutor "interviewing" 20 Republican staff and nearly 150 Democratic staff being subpoenaed and forced to testify under oath while being grilled by aggressive prosecutors. And, don't forget that the House Republicans destroyed their hard drives over the summer of 2007. All the emails and documents are long gone.
