DENVER—U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) won Pennsylvania by a solid margin during the Democratic primary fight and she has her fair share of support among the Democratic leadership in the Keystone State.
But when asked if the state’s delegation was ready to rally around the candidacy of Barack Obama, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, himself a major Clinton booster during the primaries, had a simple answer: Yes.
“Pennsylvania was completely united at our breakfast this morning,” Nutter said as he stood in the lobby of the Grand Hyatt, referring to the delegation’s morning meeting today.
“People who love Sen. Clinton will continue to love Sen. Clinton. I love Sen. Clinton,” the first term mayor said. “But our Democratic nominee is going to be Sen. Barack Obama. That’s who our party voted for. We’re going to make him the next president of the United States. We are fully united around him.”
Nutter suggested that Obama hit a grand slam with his selection of U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) as his running mate, saying that Biden’s name carried great weight in the tri-state area.
“We have a winning ticket, and that’s what we’re focused on for the next 72 days,” said Nutter.
Hardball host and possible Pa. U.S. Senate candidate Chris Matthews returns to the Ellen Show today. Will we see more of this? >
